Post Posties
A postie is someone who posts on his blog a lot. (I just made that up.) "Post postie" is a postmodernist way of describing the condition of having gotten beyond, or anyway past, the condition of frequent posting. I became post postie because of a busy summer. A busy autumn looms (in fact, it's already upon me), but I'll try to post a bit more often.
But meanwhile I hear that LiveJournal is in fact that hot way to have a blog, not Blogger or other venues. In LiveJournal you can do things with "Friends" not available here. I got going here on Blogger because a friend opened a blog and for a while (until she changed her settings) you had to join to comment. Now my friend has closed up her shop, other friends here are also (or exclusively) posting on LiveJournal, and here I am, out of date again.
This is the story of my life, to be forever one phase shift behind. I show up in my tie-dye T-shirt, bong in hand, and everyone is three blocks away throwing themselves into a mosh pit.

Hrm. I can sympathize. Like many leading-edge Gen Xers, I've always been told I'm belated -- a few years late to the party and not worth inviting anyway. Talking with others my age, it seems most of us finally got out of that rut in our early-to-mid 30s. (I suspect the onset of Gen Y had something to do with this: a group in the national consciousness getting positive attention with whom we share affinities.)
The community aspects of LJ are a big part of its appeal, despite a sometimes clunky interface -- though that it's taken me all morning to manage to post this is also a problem -- especially compared to a loose affilation of web logs. Free blogging is good for some sorts of chatter, but the socialization of friends is better handled on something more like a message board. So claims this quondam sysop.
And just so you know: the coolest kids have moved on from Xanga to DeviantArt; the coolest technorati are at MySpace.

Too young for Woodstock, too old for disco. I feel your pain. As one who has added an LJ, I keep trying to break out what I'm going to post in one place and one in another. I like Blogger's interface a lot more. On the other hand, people on LJ are more likely to respond, and as Larry says, there's a whole community there. On the other hand, part of me is simply afraid that, as with the Borg, I will be assimilated.
So, for the moment at least, I'm showing up in both venues. Glad to see you posting again, Greg.
No one has ever confused me with being cool, but I note for the record that livejournal.com as a whole is blocked by my (and presumably many other) work sites, and that the community aspects are mitigated by co-blogging (e.g., your other blog) and those links on the right side of the page.
